Simon Grayson came as a surprise signing in the summer of 1997. Brian Little knew he was a very good player from his days as manager of Leicester, and when he discovered he was available, he immediately went for him.

Unfortunately, Grayson never truly settled at Aston Villa and never managed to secure a first team spot. Two seasons was all he needed before realising that his future was elsewhere. He left for Blackburn in the Summer of 1999.
