John Fashanu - Striker
|
"Fash the Bash" joined Villa from Wimbledon at the start of the 1994-95 season for £1,250,000. He combines football with a variety of successful business enterprises and other activities including presenting TVs "Gladiators", and being an ambassador for the Unicef. He was leading scorer for Wimbledon in five of his eight seasons there following his transfer from Millwall in 1986 scoring a total of 107 league goals and winning an FA cup winners medal in 1988. Other clubs were Cambridge, Norwich, Crystal Palace and Lincoln.
He achieved notoriety after an incident involving his elbow and Gary Mabbutts face which nearly ended the latter's career. He has two England caps. His career was over after he sustained a knee injury in a tackle with Ryan Giggs during the away match vs Man. Utd. in 1994-95.
He has been arrested twice on suspicion of match fixing! Whether there's any truth in those rumors is unknown, but it should be added that the accusations point towards matches before his Aston Villa career. He was acquitted in January 96 as was fellow defendants, goalkeepers Bruce Grobelaar and Hans Segers.
